Redesign of the app for controlling and monitoring water pumps
10 min read

Pump Portal is a platform that enables remote monitoring and real-time control of water pumping stations.

Our main task was to improve the design, creating an intuitive interface for users and simplifying the setup for administrators. The next step was to adapt the platform for mobile devices to provide convenient access anytime, anywhere.

Problems with the previous design:

  1. The navigation was complicated and chaotic. After the launch, there was no designer on the team, so the developers added functionality independently.
  2. Critical data about pumping stations was placed on different pages, and users often couldn't find important information. This led to frequent calls to the support service.
  3. The lack of an adaptive mobile version limited the control of water pumping stations outside the office.
  4. The previous design of the platform looked outdated and unattractive to users.

Design Process

Analysis: The first step was to research the app, list all our questions, interview stakeholders and the support team about the problems users and administrators have, and discuss their expectations.

Types of users and use cases: After categorizing all users, we created personas for them and developed detailed use cases. This allowed us to better think through the information architecture

New design system: We created a new design system using a modern color palette and choosing the best fonts. Our approach was aimed at integrating best practices and modern trends, enabling us to achieve an excellent outcome. As a result, our new design system looks stylish and functional, providing a great user experience.

New Design for Users

Dashboard: We have thoroughly revised the home screen and added a dashboard where users can instantly see all their devices and respond to any errors in time.

Statistics: Realizing the importance of statistics and data comparison for users, we decided to add this functionality to the new product version. This will allow users to track changes in device operation, analyze performance, and determine which devices work better.

Notification settings: Customizing notifications was the biggest challenge in the design and development process. Users can add an unlimited number of contacts for notifications and manage their activation and interaction. Such functionality is crucial because quick action is needed in the event of a pump problem or other emergency to minimize the consequences and avoid significant losses.

However, it was essential to provide the possibility of complex settings for each notification, scheduling calls, emails, and messages at various intervals to different team members depending on the previous action.

In addition to large teams, there are independent platform users for whom such complex and multi-level notification settings are not relevant, so we have also developed simpler options. They allow users to switch between settings and enable advanced notifications only when needed.

Adaptation for mobile devices: We have adapted all the features for mobile devices so that users can conveniently use the platform on their smartphones and tablets.

New design for administrators

When the user interface was developed, we started working on the functionality for administrators. We have simplified the configuration of devices to add them immediately when creating an account.

A new feature for administrators was a dashboard with all the important information. With this approach, they can better control and manage devices and accounts on one convenient interface.

Conclusion

Our team has successfully improved the portal's functionality, simplified management, and increased productivity for all types of users. New features, such as simplified device addition and statistics analysis on a single dashboard, enable efficient task performance and improve the user experience.
